We have SEO Rockstars, but are SEOs the new Rockstars?

A question came to me whilst at SMX Advanced in Seattle, has the “personality culture” within the industry created a situation where the more well known personalities can now command the same sort of perks as a mainstream personality? Now I can’t see Matt Cutts demanding from Danny a rider of cocaine, hookers and Cristal (although maybe something to think about Matt to make the conferences a little bit more worthwhile?) but conference after conference you see people congregating around Matt as if Jimi Hendrix had arrived. I think Matt is an incredibly nice bloke always has the time of day for you and manages what is potentially an antagonistic relationship between SEOs and Google extremely well (that really wasn’t meant to sound as sycophantic as it did!).

The situation arose when I went to say hello to a well known SEO. He was stood next to an attractive blonde and as I approached him she started being somewhat obnoxious say “Hey this is xxxx xxxxx, you want to speak to xxxx xxxx” like I shouldn’t of been anywhere near him as a mere mortal. I have spent a fair bit of time with this SEO and to his credit he said “Oh this is Ekky, he’s one of my buddies” at which point she backed off. I know several other high profile SEO who have the situation where they go to a show and they get, to varying extents, mobbed and it would be understandable that they might feel their personal space is being invaded.

A good number of SEOs have a high profile but I would like to know what benefits and issues does this celebrity status produce? Is SEO now all about, b*tches, bling and avoiding the maddening crowds?

  1. I agree with what you’re saying…all of the “names” I’ve met have so far, luckily, been extremely nice and helpful but there is definitely a cult of personality in the industry that’s unnerving. I think it’s very intimidating for many newcomers as well. Everyone needs to realize that these are all just normal people without magical powers. I don’t think that most of the SEOlebrities create these myths–it’s the people who worship them who make them larger than life.

  2. They are all far too nice. If I got that famous I’d be a nightmare!

    ;)

  3. Where are my b*tches and bling? I think I need to have a photo taken with Matt Cutts.

  4. lol, great post Ecky and very true! Julie you are right most of the so called SEOblerbrities (ehh dont know what I was trying to pull of there) are really nice people. But you do occasionally the odd one out that are too important to talk to you, which ironically isn’t the ones that are REALLY well known (they just think they are). Hey we should have a nicest SEO competition, I vote for Graywolf!

  5. Though the networking sessions seemed a little clique-y @ SMX, one of the refreshing things about this industry is how down to earth the ‘rockstars’ are. It seemed to me that most of the time they are just clique-y because they want to hang out with friends who have also been in the industry as long as they have. But they’re also more than willing to meet new people like myself!
